PARKING FINE

YAMADA_forweb.jpgPARALLEL PARKING. IT'S AN ART ISN'T IT?

Kentaro Yamada certainly thinks so. The Japanese artist has taken the subject and used it as inspiration for a beautiful and frankly hilarious little film piece. You know, when you actually stop to think about it, there is something quite pure about the simple act of parking between two cars: getting it right first time, the precision of being perfectly between two objects, each perfectly parallel with the curb of the pavement. It just takes an artist to see it. Yamada saw it, and then, using cranes and high definition cameras, he found the best way to capture it, with a little humour thrown in for good measure. Check it out via the link below. It’s not on YouTube because Yamada created it in such a way that it needs three screens running in parallel, presumably to fit with the subject; the YouTube player doesn’t do it justice. Scroll down to the relevant piece and click on the Quicktime symbol. It's worth it.

Hmm... most entries on this I find pretty good but I just don't get this at all. Most of Kentaro's art, whilst based on a good concept is poorly executed in my opinion...

Each to their own! I like the idea first and foremost, the way he sees possibilities in something as mundane as parking. And then I actually think the execution works. Through the light, the music and the pace with which he tells the story, he manages to turn this simple act into an exercise in human accomplishment and geometry!
