A NOBLE PURSUIT
Picture the scene: An English Gent reaches a certain point in his life
and thinks “Right, I’m going to buy a proper British sports car.” His
wife says “No, Darling. Don’t be silly!” But off he trots. He always
fancied a Jaguar, but they are now owned by Ford. How about a Bentley?
No, Volkswagen have got their ruthlessly efficient paws on that. “TVR
(named after the founder, Trevor) must be British”, he thinks. But even
they have gone - the new toy of a 28 year old Russian oligarch. Our
intrepid Gent, determined to enjoy his mid-life crisis, has nearly
given up hope...
Until, that is, he reads about a humble factory in Barwell, Leicestershire. This is the home of Noble Automotive Limited. Noble is a car company that shuns the glamorous side of the industry. Its sole concern is making machines that are blistering around a track and stunning on the roads. Each car is hand-built by a small but highly specialised and devoted team of unsung heroes. They are craftsmen, combining a rare blend of charisma, skill, dedication and modesty. They take pride in building cars that demolish the world’s best and cost almost half the price. The Noble M15 has a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds and will hit 185 mph. It costs £75k. The Porsche equivalent costs £131k.
Noble is a dying breed indeed, a group of people who place pride and perfection above profit and fame. To most, Noble may not be the coolest brand on the road, but for me, their determination to upset the apple cart of the international car industry places them right at the top of my dream car wish-list.
