INNOVATORS DIE HARD.
In 1996, Etienne De Crecy produced the seminal album, Superdiscount. It was the launch pad for French Touch, spawning the likes of Daft Punk, Alex Gopher and Air. There are guys that are now safely into their thirties that once embraced this new ‘filter funk’ as a welcome alternative to that Ministry of Sound sound. For those that remember - Tori Amos was a Professional Widow, Underworld were Born Slippy, David Morales, Apollo Four Forty, Todd Terry...
Time for a change, then. De Crecy’s new electronic sound provided something totally new. The Godfather of French house filled a gaping hole and that impact of 12 years ago has seen splinters flying far and wide. He arguably triggered France’s most culturally credible export of recent times.
De Crecy is back, and, ever the innovator, he appears, with a little help from some friends, to have solved another problem, that of how to make an impact during a live show when you’re equipment isn’t a Gibson Les Paul but a Macbook Pro. He has been touring this year and leaving all other laptop live shows in the shadows. Check out the debut outing of his rig, brilliantly created by Francois Wunshel and Pier Schneider at Exyzt. This is taken from Transmusicales de Rennes at the back end of last year and, if truth be told, will blow you away:
